MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN (Terry Jones, 1979, UK) Heresy! The Freethinking Pythons walk on water as they lampoon and lambaste foolish religious beliefs and the human desire for faith at the cost of reason. I think many viewers are confused because this is a barbed-wire indictment of religiosity, not a gentle parody; this film does not show Christianity in any kind light! Though the troupe is careful not to goose step on Christ’s toes (or wash them, for that matter) they nonetheless poke fun at Church doctrine and skewer Holy ethics and morality. This movie was banned in a few countries and picketed in many more upon its initial release; to disturb the status quo is always good fun! “You'll see it's all a show, Keep 'em laughing as you go. Just remember that the last laugh is on you.” (B+) The Blu-Ray video quality is super with nice detail, sharpness, and good color balance. The audio is excellent and the score is fully immersive and, for the first time on home video, all dialogue is clear and understandable! No more mumbling and shrill trumpets.
