WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE (Robert Aldrich, 1962, USA) The fear and anxiety are palpable in nearly every scene between these two legendary Divas as a barbed Bette Davis spars with a subdued Joan Crawford…in character, of course. The raging enmity just adds a knife-edge tension and catapults this classic into iconic status! Jane becomes more and more psychotic and locks her sister away from the world attempting to drive her crazy with abuse. Jane believes that the world is ready once again for Baby Jane Hudson and begins planning her startling comeback. The film ends on a California beach as Baby Jane has finally lost all touch with reality and mentally reverts back to the little girl…but is her sister dead??? This is the story that inspired Stephen King’s MISERY. (B+)
