MARGOT AT THE WEDDING (Noah Baumbach, 2007, USA) Pill-popping pompous nincompoops: I wish the tree had crushed everyone in this film! I enjoyed the neurotic and character-driven drama of SQUID AND THE WHALE but this vacuous movie leads the viewer to an emotional dead-end. Jack Black plays the only barely sympathetic character but by the film’s final act he’s rather annoying and defeated. There is no epiphany here that leads someone towards self-discovery: only whining spoiled brats who get what he or she deserves. The ending could have been the saving grace of the film but instead we get more of the same shallow and insipid dialogue…if only Baumbach ended the film with three words. (F)
