300 (Zack Snyder, 2007, USA) If you want an accurate account of the Battle of Thermopylae then watch the History Channel. But if you are in the mood for a violent blood-soaked cartoon with fist-pumping testosterone-fueled macho dialogue spoken with the sincerity of a Shakespearean drama then by all means queue this! This is no 5 star movie as some fanboys proclaim though it’s not the death knell for intelligent cinema either; it’s just a rather mundane and cool-looking action flick that remains faithful to Miller’s comics. FYI: this movie looks and sounds astounding on Blu-ray which is now the preferred format of your humble narrator. (C)
