THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (David Silverman, 2007, USA) A mediocre big screen debut for America’s favorite yellow TV family that would have been much better as an hour long special. There are a few laugh-out-loud moments but the majority of the film is no better (or worse) than the television show. I feel this was a wasted opportunity to redefine the groundbreaking series by utilizing the longer run-time and less-restrictive narrative structure; the writers failed to hone their barbed wire wit and ensnare the ridiculous pop-culture stereotypes they profoundly denounce. The Simpsons are becoming the very thing the creators despise and the self-deprecating humor can’t halt the steady decline. D’OH! (C)
