THE HOST (Joon-ho Bong, 2006, South Korea) This South Korean monster flick is surprisingly a keen family melodrama and political attack on US egocentrism. After an American doctor orders that toxic waste be dumped in the Han river, a tadpole mutates into a giant carnivore and terrorizes the city of Seoul. This film bypasses most of the generic monster movie attitudes and instead focuses on the characters and their familial interactions. (B)
